user experience desgin: family restroom finder

Our cities and public spaces, seemingly made for able bodied adults, are far from inclusive universal design. The needs of children, families, the elderly, and the alter-abled are often an afterthought. We can’t change the world, yet, but thoughtful design can make it inclusive and easier to access. For all.

PROBLEM STATEMENT + HYPOTHESIS

Parents and caregivers need help find accommodating public restrooms for their physical dependents.

We believe that through simple way-finding we can achieve a more inclusive consumer experience.

We will know this to be true when we see longer outings, families and caregivers as patrons in unexpected places, and reduced stress around outings of necessity.

user interviews + personas

SIX interviews were conducted with parents and caregivers who navigate public spaces with physical dependents in tow. Each person had unique solutions when in ‘survival mode’, but similarities can be drawn between them to discern primary motivations and pain points, which are represented in this persona.
