YOUNG ART: The story of me at San Diego Museum of Art
Young Art is the Museum's biennial exhibition of K-12 student artwork from San Diego County schools. Young Art 2013: The Story of Me focuses on art that explores personal identity. Students artwork tells "The Story of Me" through artistic representations depicting their culture, traditions, family, friends, memories, experiences, or physical appearance through portraiture, narrative, masks, and more. The juried student art is exhibited alongside works from the museum's permanent collection.
I was tasked with designing an interactive space within the gallery for the visiting public of all ages. Below is the evolution of that space: "What's your story? / ¿Cuál es tu historia?".
interactive space + reading area
Child sized furniture atop a cozy rug invited the public to reflect, make art, and read an art book. Visitors of all ages were invited to draw their self-portrait in response to the open-ended prompt "What's your story? / ¿Cuál es tu historia?", and add it to the gallery walls.
conceptual illustration
Original sketch to convey the interactive space's layout, scale, and functionality to the Director of Education and the installation team.
curator VINYL proof
Final proof of vinyl copy awaiting approval of the curatorial team.
I had the honor of authoring the audio tour of the exhibition, which is available on iTunes.
portrait cards
The cards were designed with an open-ended prompt to encourage playful, symbolic, or abstract expressions of the visitor's self-representation.
position within the museum
The interactive space was given a central position within the Young Art exhibition's galleries.
